Brisbane Close to Beating a Battered Collingwood.

Brisbane go down to brave Collingwood, The Pies Looked gone as Brisbane took the lead in the Third Quarter, Brisbane kept the Pies goal less for more than 30 minutes before the pies turned on a burst of 5 goals late in the game to snatch back the lead and to eventually win by 26 points, the Magpies were brave as they lost Swan, Maxwell, Caracella and Fraser was not fit, Buckley lead the way with 6 goals.

What the Coaches Said :

Leigh Matthews Said : “It was a great challenge to see how they came up – we didn’t come up great, we were a bit stilted with our ball movement and were a bit scared to move the ball too quickly, but when we did we looked likely to score the most,” Matthews said. “The tension sometimes stops you doing that, so I hope it was a good learning experience for our guys.“We’re feeling disappointed and dejected – we gave ourselves a chance there for a while.“But I’m proud too ¬- there were a lot of good things about our group. Given where we are right at the moment it makes you think this group of players that are going to represent us in the next few years can be okay.”

Leigh Matthews 400th - Brisbane Lions loose - AFL Blog

It wasn't a memorable way to celebrate a fantastic achievement for legendary Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews on Saturday night.

Matthews became only the 12th coach in AFL history to reach the illustrious milestone of coaching 400 games, and he was able to find some positive aspects to take out of the 18.14 (122) to 9.9 (63) loss to premiership leader West Coast at Subiaco Oval.

The Lions were patient with the ball in their hands in the first quarter, and continued to show the same composure when chipping the ball around the back half until finding a way forward in the second term.

Judd played a hand in an early Eagles goal in the second term, and the danger signs were flashing when the home side went 22 points clear after Brent Staker and Quentin Lynch both marked strongly in the one passage of play.

With Notting beating regular thorn Embley, the Lions enjoyed a dominant 18-minute period and trailed 7.3-7.6 with two minutes to go before halftime.

Judd then put the game out of the Lions reach in the opening 15 minutes of the third term, kicking two goals and having a hand in two others.

When Ash McGrath nailed a set shot from 50m, it broke a 37-minute goal drought for the visitors, and they had to wait another 22 minutes before posting their second goal of the half midway through the final term.

West Coast Eagles, 5.4, 9.7, 13.12, 18.14 (122)
